A message from the President and Vice-Chancellor

Dear colleagues, students, alumni,

You may be aware that one local newspaper reported yesterday (6th December 2010) that the Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) intends to apply for the whole plot of land designated for higher education development in the Lok Ma Chau Loop. I would like to share with you that what has reported on newspaper was just an idea for the benefit of the higher education sector in Hong Kong. This matter has not been discussed at the University Council or Administration.

When invited to share views on higher education development in the Lok Ma Chau Loop, I highlighted the importance of making material benefits to local universities, including initiatives that support their long-term planning in future decades. In doing so, I believe that concentrating resources to a meaningful amount is a better option than sharing the resources in small pieces.

I would like to reassure again that at the moment, the University Administration arranges no discussion at any level about the use of the land in Lok Ma Chau Loop. The University will continue to look into opportunities that help the further advancement of HKBU in Hong Kong and in the region.

Taking this opportunity, may I thank members of the University community for their continuous support. I am sure that with our concerted effort, HKBU will continue to excel new heights.

Professor Albert S C Chan
President and Vice-Chancellor

7th December 2010
